From Dusk To Dawn

The importance of a good night’s sleep cannot be underestimated. Not only does it leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to face the challenges of the day, but is strongly linked to many physical and psychological health benefits.

Research has shown that long term poor sleeping habits are associated with higher incidence of serious conditions such as heart disease and diabetes and can be a factor in serious mental health issues including depression and anxiety.

The benefits are equally as important in childhood - sleep deprived children are placed at higher risk of obesity and demonstrate lower levels of concentration compared to those who sleep well.

At From Dusk to Dawn we understand the challenges that many parents face in getting their children to sleep through the night and the high levels of stress, anxiety and difficulties that this often creates. Our mission is to help parents overcome these problems in a safe and understanding environment, empowering them to enjoy fully the happy and special times that childhood should bring.

Alison Mackay and Tim Bull are the founders of From Dusk to Dawn. We are both qualified and registered nurses and health visitors who have gained extensive experience in both community public health and specialist acute settings. We share between us a passion for working with families where poor sleep patterns have created problems.

Building upon our health visiting knowledge, we jointly undertook a course of specialist sleep practitioner training provided by some of the leading experts in the field. On completion of this, we formed a team to establish a childhood sleep clinic within a busy London NHS trust, and were further tasked with co-ordinating and facilitating all sleep training to staff within that trust.

We have gained first-hand experience in dealing with a wide range of childhood sleep problems, working with parents to further their knowledge and understanding of childhood sleep patterns and tailoring bespoke programmes to meet families’ holistic needs. Feedback from parents who have implemented our interventions has been overwhelmingly positive.

Common complaints we come across include:

Why won’t my baby sleep through the night?
How can I stop my toddler coming into our bedroom overnight?
How do I stop my child co-sleeping with us?
My child’s having tantrums at bedtime.
My child wakes too early.
How can I get my child into a good routine?

If you feel that your child’s sleep is having a negative impact on the wellbeing on anyone in the family, or if any of the above comments sound familiar, please do get in touch to discuss ways in which we can help. We look forward to hearing from you.

Who is Tim?

I am a registered Nurse and Health Visitor, whose qualifications include a BSc in Nursing Studies, a BSc (Hons) First Class degree in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing, a post graduate certificate in Practice Education (1&2)and a further post graduate certificate in Advanced Practice – Safeguarding Children. I am currently working towards completion of my post graduate Masters degree. My work roles in the community setting have included working as a specialist safeguarding advisor covering both community and acute healthcare settings, working as a practice teacher mentoring and assessing student health visitors, and managing a busy health visiting team in a diverse, inner London area.

Prior to my move to health visiting I was employed as a staff nurse in a Central London Accident and Emergency department where, alongside other duties, I gained invaluable experience in caring for critically unwell babies and children.

As a doting and pro-active father, I am well aware of the challenges and distress faced by the many for whom childhood sleep issues create a problem. I like to think that my empathetic approach, alongside my knowledge, experience and professionalism, has informed the positive feedback I regularly receive from my clients and colleagues.

Out of work I love spending time at home with my family and pet dog, and enjoy cycling, cooking, and reading.

Who is Alison…

I am a registered nurse and health visitor whose qualifications include a BSc in Nursing Studies and a BSc (Hons) First Class degree in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing. My work roles in the community setting have included working as a Community Nurse within a Health Visiting team mainly focusing on developmental progression of babies from 3 months to 5 years old, managing a complex Health Visiting caseload in a diverse, inner London area as part of a Health Visiting team and my current position as manager of a busy Health Visiting team for an inner London NHS Trust. Alongside this role I retain responsibility for maintaining and supporting the running of the sleep clinic and co-ordinating and facilitating sleep training for the health visiting staff.

Prior to Working in the community I was a critical care nurse in two Inner City Hospitals. Being faced with life and death on a daily basis really emphasized the importance of living each day to the maximum and fully appreciating those around you – which can be difficult when you and your child are both physically and emotionally exhausted.

My interests outside of nursing include planning my wedding, tennis, yoga and exotic holidays.
